YouTuber lands Director of Rugby role

Robbie Owen (Squidge Rugby) has been announced as the Director Of Rugby for the inclusive invitational side War Baboons RFC

In the modern age we live in, it’s not uncommon to see online superstars cross the digital boundaries into the real sporting world. YouTubers have played at Wembley, entered a team called Hashtag United in the English football pyramid and even bought naming rights to shirts, stands and stadia… however, arguably rugby’s biggest YouTuber has also made the transition.

Robbie Owen has made a name for himself under the Squidge Rugby banner combining high quality game analysis, quick witted humour and lovable DIY video editing. In less than 5 years, the Welshman has amassed a huge following, with a YouTube channel boasting a 200,000+ subscriber count and nearly 30 million views. While many fans have praised Squidge for his comedic videos, it’s his knowledge and understanding of the game that’s turned many heads - including the likes of Rassie Erasmus

Some argued it was only a matter of time before Squidge applied his head away from the editing suite and into the clubhouse

The team to come calling - War Baboons RFC. A charity invitational team focusing on social inclusion and social change. Playing annual fixtures to raise funds for various causes (such as The Survivors Trust to name a few). The side have been pretty vocal in their support of the LGBTQ+ community and with Squidge’s public support of inclusion with rugby well documented, this piece of recruitment for War Baboons seems very appropriate.

While the details of Squidge’s start date remain unannounced, the YouTube sensation will also get the opportunity to lace up his boots as he takes up a player/coach role with War Baboons RFC - joining the playing squad as a winger.
